A Case of Congenital Atresia of External Auditory Canal with Facial Paralysis

Abstract
Altmann(1965) conveniently classified the congenital aural anomalies into 3 groups according to the degree of severity. And which are combined occasionally with other congenital anomalies of the head and neck.
In atresia of external auditory canal, we divide them into congenital and acquired form. The former is osseous and the latter is membranous. Atresia of acquired form develops secondarily from burn laceration and post ear surgery and shows a higher incidence than that of congenital form.
By Mundnich(1966)congenital aural anomalies ate encountered in about one out of 10, 000 to 20, 000 individuals.
The atresia of the external auditory canal recently experienced by authors was the unilateral congenital form with normal auricle and tragus and also showed facial paralysis homolaterally. The case presented was 19 year old male oriental.
After a proper preoperative check, meatoplasty and tympanoplasty were made under the local anesthesia. In pure tone audiometry, we obtained 40 dB hearing gain and meatoplasty and tympanoplasty were successful. So we made the brief review of literature.
